HNTB Corporation | Construction

HNTBWe’re dealing with a structure that’s a quarter of a mile wide and more than 400 feet tall. The 18x zoom on the Web cam does a great job of bringing in distant details and letting us see activity anywhere on the bridge.

The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) contracted with HNTB Corporation to design and manage construction of the new U.S. 82 bridge at Greenville, Miss., one of the largest bridges under construction in the world today. Upon its completion in 2006, the bridge will feature the third longest cable-stayed span in North America (1378 feet/420 meters) and one of the longest bridge spans of any type on the Mississippi River. The Greenville Bridge Web site (greenvillebridge.com), developed by HNTB, documents construction with a variety of sophisticated media including an online photo album, video clips and other interactive features. An equally sophisticated Web cam solution was required, with interactivity and flexibility being critical factors. HNTB installed a TrueLook camera at the end of a grain elevator approximately 1/8-mile upriver from the new bridge. The camera’s 18x zoom provides close-up views of activity across the entire construction site, as well as views of the existing U.S. 82 bridge located a quarter-mile upstream.

The Web cam has helped maintain a steady audience for the Web site, which draws up to 700 visits per day.
