Q&A with Steve McDowall: How TrueLook Cameras Make Managing Construction Sites Easier

Viewing, securing, and documenting jobsites is no small task. Not only do you have to keep track of progress to make sure projects stay budget-friendly and are completed within the required timeframe, but you also have to ensure the jobsite stays safe and secure all while maintaining comprehensive records.

Finding a solution that simplifies these tasks is key to managing a successful construction project. At TrueLook, our goal is to provide solutions that not only make it possible but also make it easy to document construction, so you can run more efficient projects.

We sat down with TrueLook’s VP of Product, Steve McDowall, to ask him about how TrueLook’s Cameras can make managing construction sites easier. Here’s what he had to say:

Q: Why should construction firms use TrueLook Cameras?

One of TrueLook’s strengths is our customer-first mentality. We understand the challenges and complexities that managers and owners face when managing construction sites, and our goal is to make it easier for them to succeed.

We work with our customers to solve the problems that they’re facing and deliver unique solutions that utilize our breadth of solutions and services to fit the specific needs of each customer’s jobsite. When it comes to using our cameras, we’ve ensured that they’re as user-friendly as possible. Lastly, our costs are straightforward. We guarantee our prices upfront and don’t charge hidden fees or for overages.

Q: What are the key features that distinguish TrueLook from our competitors?

We don’t just sell cameras, we focus on selling complete solutions. No two jobsites are alike, and with a wide range of camera options, we can create unique, end-to-end solutions for our customers. For example, you can choose from multiple power-source options, including 110V and solar, which enables the cameras to function on any site.

The features that are essential to every jobsite come parceled with every available camera: live viewing, Intelligent Security, and time-lapsing capabilities.

Q: What are the key features that distinguish construction cameras from traditional surveillance cameras?

Our construction cameras are designed to offer full jobsite monitoring, giving companies the ability to view an entire project at once. This comprehensive visibility is highly valued by the majority of our customers for real-time monitoring and documentation purposes. In contrast, basic surveillance cameras lack the capacity to provide such extensive documentation.

Q: What are some common challenges faced by construction companies that are addressed by implementing construction cameras?

One of the biggest challenges that construction companies face is adopting the use of new technology, construction cameras included. Some construction companies are hesitant to implement the latest technology, and others are weighing the cost and time of learning new tech with the demands of projects they’re working on.

What I’ve seen is that once project managers and construction company owners start to see the value that cameras can provide, they are quick to adopt the new technology. The benefits are not just in terms of monitoring, but also documentation and creating time-lapsing videos that can be used for marketing and impressing clients.

Q: Can you elaborate a bit on the different kinds of cameras?

There are two major classifications of cameras: fixed-position cameras and PTZ (pan-tilt-zoom) cameras. Then within those two categories, there are a huge variety of different styles of cameras. For example, we offer several styles of fixed-position cameras depending on our customers’ needs, including indoor, outdoor, and different view levels.

But what we’re really focused on at TrueLook is offering full solutions. To do that, customers can purchase accessories, such as strobes and sirens as well as various mounting options. We also have many solutions currently in R&D that we expect to launch within the next few months. We’re not just selling cameras, we’re selling solutions that solve real problems that arise on construction jobsites every day.

Q: Explain how TrueLook Cameras capture time-lapses, and what they can be used for.

Setting up a time-lapse is simple and can be done in under five minutes. Just choose how frequently you want to take images, the project’s date range, and the active hours of your jobsite. Plus, PTZ cameras give you the option to time-lapse multiple areas and create panoramic time-lapses.  Our platform collects all those images and stitches them together to create a short movie. Plus, with unlimited data, you can capture and store as many time-lapses as you need for each camera.

The videos and images can also be used to create slideshows that will automatically play and are easily shareable. Our platform provides sharing links that customers can use to share access on different platforms, and allows customers to see the live feed of the camera for real-time progress updates.

The goal is to make these features as easy as possible for our customers to use so they can seamlessly market and promote their projects while sharing updates with project owners and investors.

Q: What are some additional unique features?

The first thing I would emphasize is how easy it is to work with the TrueLook team and how intuitive our platform is. Our cameras are essentially plug-and-play, requiring only a simple installation before they’re ready to use.

The other really cool feature is our dashboards, which enable project managers and project owners to see multiple builds that they’re managing all at once. Lastly, our platform gets free regular updates. As long as you’re a customer, you’ll have access to all the latest updates from TrueLook.
