Project Highlight: Kaleideum

Innovative and dynamic experiential learning museum

Construction on the new Downtown Winston-Salem Kaleideum, a five-story, 73,600-square-foot museum, ran from June 2022 through January 2024. The project team relied on a TrueLook PTZ Camera not only to monitor construction progress in real time but also to enhance jobsite security. The camera’s pan-tilt-zoom capabilities provided comprehensive coverage of the site, helping the team track milestones and oversee work safely. With the camera positioned to focus primarily on the exterior wall, it captured the intricate assembly of the colorful metal panels and textured precast concrete designed with folding surfaces to create dynamic light, shadow, and color effects. The camera also automatically captured high-quality time-lapses and photos, giving the team a visual record of the project from groundbreaking to ribbon-cutting that could be shared with stakeholders and the community.

Kaleideum’s new facility, born from the merger of The Children’s Museum of Winston-Salem and Sci-Works, is designed to inspire curiosity and lifelong learning through innovative design, interactive exhibits, and public engagement. The TrueLook PTZ Camera captured the progress of the exterior wall construction, creating a digital window into the construction for both the team and the public. By combining real-time monitoring, security oversight, and visually compelling time-lapses and photos, the camera helped ensure a smooth workflow while documenting the creation of a landmark destination that enhances downtown connectivity and offers a dynamic experience for visitors of all ages.
